Check official datesVerified today

We are seeking a Content Lead to write Tech Safari's weekly feature edition, edit the work of our newer writers and freelancers, and work with the Head of Growth and Editorial to decide what Tech Safari publishes next. This is a full-time, mid-level role, and it is not an entry point into journalism. You will report to the Head of Growth and Editorial and be their closest editorial partner. That means you will be trusted to make calls on stories, to push back when a piece is not ready, and to help shape how the newsletters grow. Every week you will turn the business of African tech into a story that is timely, well-sourced, and worth reading. You will cover fintech, logistics, energy, health, agritech, policy, and capital across West, East, North, and Southern Africa, and you will know the difference between a press release and a story.

About Tech Safari

Tech Safari covers the future of African technology and business. Its flagship newsletter reaches more than 60,000 founders, investors, operators, and business leaders, including professionals working at major companies such as Paystack, Flutterwave, Mastercard, Meta, and McKinsey.

The company's media portfolio includes three publications:

  • Tech Safari: Covers African business, technology, and investment.
  • Ag Safari: Focuses on African agritech and connects founders, investors, and public-sector stakeholders.
  • The Big Move: Explores diaspora-led innovation and opportunities to build and scale businesses across Africa.

Tech Safari also operates Talent Safari, a talent-matching business, and organises events and summits focused on technology and agriculture.

Key Responsibilities

1. Writing and Research

  • Research and write the weekly Tech Safari feature newsletter on African technology, business, and the economy.
  • Write at least one edition of The Big Move each month.
  • Identify important stories through original research, company reports, funding data, and conversations with founders, investors, operators, and regulators.
  • Cover different sectors, including fintech, logistics, energy, healthcare, agritech, public policy, and investment.
  • Report on developments across West, East, North, and Southern Africa.

2. Editing and Editorial Quality

  • Edit the weekly roundup, This Week in African Tech, before publication.
  • Review articles from junior writers and freelance contributors.
  • Provide constructive feedback that improves writers' skills and the quality of their work.
  • Help evaluate pitches submitted through the company's open pitch programme.
  • Maintain high editorial standards and ensure stories are accurate, engaging, and well-researched.

3. Content Strategy and Audience Growth

  • Work with the Head of Growth and Editorial to develop new newsletter formats and content themes.
  • Identify ways to improve reader engagement and newsletter growth.
  • Respond to readers' feedback and use their insights to improve future editions.
  • Suggest ways to adapt journalism into podcasts, videos, and other media formats.
  • Help maintain a consistent editorial voice across Tech Safari, Ag Safari, and The Big Move.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants should have:

  • At least four years of experience writing about business, technology, or economics.
  • Published writing samples that demonstrate original reporting and writing.
  • Experience editing other people's work, whether as an editor, team lead, or experienced writer.
  • A strong understanding of African technology companies, business models, fundraising, and market challenges.
  • Established connections within the African tech ecosystem, including founders, investors, or policy professionals.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • The ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities independently.
  • Confidence discussing editorial decisions and providing constructive feedback.
  • Curiosity about podcasts, video, and other media formats.
  • Familiarity with the company's publications and editorial style before applying.

Important: This is not an entry-level journalism position. The company is looking for someone who can take ownership of editorial work and make independent decisions.

Additional Skills That Will Be an Advantage

Applicants will have an added advantage if they:

  • Have experience managing or writing for newsletters.
  • Understand newsletter performance metrics such as open rates, reader replies, and subscriber growth.
  • Can analyse funding data, company reports, and spreadsheets to develop clear stories.
  • Have reported from multiple African markets.
  • Have experience using Beehiiv or similar newsletter platforms.

AI Policy and Writing Assessment

Tech Safari uses AI tools for activities such as research, transcription, and administrative work. However, the company expects the actual writing to be the candidate's own.

Shortlisted applicants will complete a writing task, and the company will assess both the final piece and how it was produced.

Candidates should therefore be comfortable demonstrating their independent writing, reporting, and editorial judgement.

Work Arrangement and Start Date

This is a full-time remote position open to qualified candidates anywhere in Africa. Tech Safari particularly prefers candidates based in Nairobi or Abuja because of the team's network and events in those locations.

The company would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.
