About the role
Resend is building an email delivery platform that helps developers send emails from their applications and services. With more than four million developers using its platform, the company is expanding its engineering team to support growing email volumes while maintaining reliability, quality and a strong developer experience.
The company is looking for a Backend Engineer who can take ownership of features from the initial idea through design, development, deployment and ongoing operation.
You will build APIs, dashboard experiences, backend services and distributed systems that handle traffic spikes, retries, background processing and failures. You will also help scale databases, improve system performance and work with customer-facing teams to identify recurring problems and turn them into product improvements.
This position suits an experienced engineer who enjoys designing systems from scratch, making thoughtful architectural decisions and operating the software they build.
Responsibilities
- Own features from initial planning and technical design through implementation, deployment and maintenance.
- Build and operate reliable distributed systems, including queues and background workers.
- Design systems that handle traffic spikes, retries, duplicate events, concurrency and partial failures.
- Develop and scale APIs, improve database performance and maintain data integrity.
- Design relational database models, investigate slow queries and make safe database changes.
- Manage production infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
- Implement monitoring, observability and safe deployment processes.
- Participate in the engineering on-call rotation and investigate production incidents.
- Work with customer support and users to understand recurring issues and improve the product.
- Improve automated testing, engineering tools, existing systems and development practices.
- Collaborate with other engineers, share knowledge and help maintain a high standard of software quality.
Requirements
Applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:
- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Substantial experience building and operating backend services in production environments.
- Practical experience with queues, asynchronous processing and distributed systems.
- Understanding of retries, duplicate events, concurrency, partial failures and reliable background processing.
- Ability to design new systems from scratch and plan their rollout safely.
- Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, deployments, observability, capacity planning and production troubleshooting.
- Experience designing APIs and relational data models.
- Ability to diagnose database performance problems and implement safe schema changes.
- Experience managing production infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
- Comfort working across the stack to deliver complete product experiences.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly.
- Willingness to help other developers and take ownership of engineering problems.
- Clear written and spoken English.
- Ability to maintain working-hour overlap with the Americas team.
Additional advantages
Candidates may have an advantage if they also possess:
- Deep experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Go and PostgreSQL.
- Experience operating production services on AWS.
- Knowledge of serverless or container-based infrastructure.
- Experience building developer tools, public APIs or email infrastructure.
The role does not state a specific university degree or certification requirement.
